A Woman’s Purse
Woman’s Purse will focus its strengths and investments through a partnership with Adams County Children and Youth’s Independent Living Program (ILP). The goal of ILP is to assist young women ages 16 to 21 through transition from foster care to being self sufficient and finding permanent connections in their lives. The Young Women are expected to take an active role in developing a plan and working towards their goals for independence.
The initiative’s powerful network of women will share their time, talents and treasures with the young women and help them work toward living on their own. Currently, there are no mentoring programs that serve young people who are older than 13.
Each member is asked to make an annual investment of $25.00 or more to the initiative. Each member is also asked to share a special part of herself with the young women or within the initiative.
Whether it’s explaining the mystery of equations, cooking a simple meal, developing a budget, or making a minor home repair—all of the small things many of us take for granted—each woman has a dynamic opportunity to support a critical need in our community.

I had the opportunity and privilege of photography the four young women who participated in the A Woman’s Purse Auction this year. I am a supervisor for the Children & Youth Agency that collaborates with this program and was asked if I would consider using my talents to help give back to a worthy cause.

I was excited about doing this project, because it offered an opportunity to make a few young adults feel special, even for just a few moments, and provide them with prints to remind them of how special they are. When dealing with youth in challenging home situations, foster care, residential programs, abusive situations and the like, it is many times difficult to find positive moments. This was a chance to record one of those moments.

The girls were provided with new outfits/accessories; purchased by A Woman’s Purse of United Way.
Their hair was done by Town & Campus Hair Care, in Gettysburg.
Their makeup was done by the Clinique counter in the Peebles department store, in Gettysburg.
